Product Description

This comprehensive card addresses an issue that's of concern to a wide variety of audiences: Indoor Smoking Kills! Whether you're speaking to property managers, landlords, or residents, you'll find that this display is full of useful information that's presented in a clear and straightforward manner.

The display begins by addressing some of the most dangerous consequences of indoor smoking. Secondhand smoke is the smoke which is exhaled by smokers or that which comes off of a lit cigarette. It is a known carcinogen that is responsible for over 40,000 adult deaths each year. Children exposed to secondhand smoke have an increased risk of developing illnesses like asthma and bronchitis. Secondhand smoke may easily affect nonsmokers as it can find its way through windows or ventilation systems.

Thirdhand smoke has just recently begun to gain the attention of researchers and the public. It is the nicotine residue that's left on surfaces, clothing, skin, etc. from tobacco smoke. Thirdhand smoke cannot be easily removed and it may become more toxic with time and even carcinogenic

Residential fires caused by smoking materials cause over $600 million in direct property damage every year and are the leading cause of civilian home fire deaths. Every year, about 1,000 people die in home fires started by smoking materials. And smokers are 7 times more likely than non-smokers to have a fire in their home.

The card goes on to address the numerous other consequences of indoor smoking. Smoked-in homes and apartments need much more cleaning and restorative work to eliminate nicotine residue and smoking-related damage. Those properties that allow indoor smoking tend to have higher insurance rates and lower profits. There is even the possibility that non-smoking tenants can bring legal actions against property owners or smoking residents because they have been exposed to secondhand smoke.

Over 230 housing authorities have successfully gone smoke-free. While these changes can take some time and research to implement, it's well worth a property owner's or landlord's time to make their property smoke-free. The change begins with establishing a smoke-free policy and educating residents on the change in policy. Leases and rental terms must be updated to reflect the changes. Once smoked-in units are vacated, the necessary steps should be taken to eliminate all the nicotine residue. And finally, the smoke-free policy must be enforced.

The concluding message of the presentation card, Indoor Smoking is Dangerous! Take it Outside! is one that is directed at benefiting the health of everyone involved.
